Rocky Mountain Express propels audiences on a steam train journey through the breathtaking vistas of the Canadian Rockies and highlights the adventure of building a nearly impossible transcontinental railway. Recruited to realize this venture—one of the greatest engineering feats of all time—were engineers and laborers from around the world. The film weaves together spectacular IMAX aerial cinematography, archival photographs and maps, and the potent energy and rhythms of a live steam locomotive to immerse audiences in this remarkable story from the age of steam.

Bruce Coughlan — Celtic Balladeer • Raconteur

For more than 50 years, Bruce Coughlan has lived the life of a full-time performing songwriter. From his early days performing original material in Alberta coffeehouses to Vancouver's formative folk circuit, Bruce built his craft song by song.

As frontman of Tiller's Folly, he has helped bring Pacific Canadian history to life through his acclaimed "Stirring Up Ghosts" songumentary work. Touring Scotland 13 times, he bridges Celtic tradition with West Coast storytelling.

Performing solo and as part of a number of shows, Bruce continues to tour internationally. In 2024 he was named ISSA International Male Vocalist of the Year and earned 3rd Place at the 2026 Music in Motion Canada Awards.

From Research to Story: Writing and Sharing Your Family History

You've compiled the names, dates, and places and gathered photographs. But how do you transform those facts and images into an engaging story?

In this workshop, we will review archival resources and types of materials to enrich your family story. Going beyond basic genealogical information, we will also explore setting, voice, and the use of nostalgia and details to add colour to your writing. We will also look at how to bring these elements together through real examples of strong storytelling from museums and archives, family historians, and other sources. Finally, we will discuss paths and platforms for sharing your story, from digital, no- or low-cost options, to printing and publishing.

Sonia Nicholson is an author and archivist in Victoria, British Columbia. She has over 17 years of experience in community, corporate, and religious archives. Previously an Archives Specialist at Saanich Archives, she is currently Archivist for the Log Cabin Museum and Archives in Saanichton, in addition to working with a religious organization and private clients.

A storyteller at heart and a published author, she mentors emerging writers on writing, the industry, and publicity. Her work, which explores themes of memory and identity, has appeared in Inspirelle, Literary Heist, Pinhole Poetry, Heimat Review, Rivanna Review, The New Quarterly, and others. From Many, One: The Story in Repetition is an exhibition that explores themes of multiples, repetition, series, and accumulation. Book Club: Exploring Indigenous Voices in Literature

Join us on the second Monday of each month from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm in the Meeting Room at the Parksville Museum for meaningful conversation and community connection. Attend one session or participate in the full series — all are welcome.

This book club focuses on powerful works that explore Indigenous history, identity, resilience, and reconciliation. Select sessions will feature Indigenous guest speakers who will share their perspectives, lived experiences, and insights to deepen our discussions.

Experience the passion of Flamenco with internationally acclaimed Cuban guitarist and composer Josué Tacoronte.

Josué has performed across the globe, mesmerizing audiences with his unique fusion of Cuban classical and Flamenco. As music director and arranger in the most prestigious Spanish ballet and Flamenco companies in Cuba, he has earned a reputation as a master of the acoustic nylon string guitar.

Multi-instrumentalist Marty Howe will join Josué on the chromatic harmonica and flute, adding a richly textured sound.

Back by popular demand, the Parksville Museum is thrilled to be presenting Harry Manx again this summer as part of our Music @ The Museum fundraising concert series.

About:
Harry Manx has spent years fusing eastern musical traditions with the blues, switching effortlessly between conventional guitars, harmonica, and banjo and the decidedly different Mohan veena, a 20-stringed instrument invented by Manx’ Indian mentor Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. Manx is often referred to as the “Mysticssippi” Blues Man, because of his expertise in melding both East and West music together and therefore, “creating musical short stories that wed the Blues with the depth of classical Indian ragas”.
Over the last 10 years, Harry Manx released 11 Albums and has garnered a room full of awards including, “seven Maple Blues Awards, six Juno nominations, the Canadian Folk Award in 2005 for Best Solo Artist and won CBC Radio’s “Great Canadian Blues Award” in 2007″. His most recent accomplishment was receiving yet another Juno Nomination for “Blues Album of the Year”, for his release, “Bread and Buddha” in 2010.

About:
Jim Byrnes is a legendary blues icon, an actor of note, and that artist who lights up every stage with songs and stories, tried and true. Jim Byrnes was born in St. Louis, Missouri – that’s blues country. He grew up on the city’s north side. One of the neighbourhood bars had Ike and Tina Turner as the house band. As a teenager going to music clubs, he and his buddy were often the only white people in the place. “We never had any problems. We were too naïve and had too much respect for the music and culture – they knew it, they could tell.”
By age thirteen, Jim was singing and playing blues guitar. His first professional gig was in 1964. Over the years, he has had the great good fortune to appear with a virtual who’s who of the blues. From Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker to Taj Mahal and Robert Cray, Jim has been on the blues highway for 45 years.

Anyone who has listened to a Brandon Isaak album or watched this three-time Juno Award nominated bluesman perform live, knows that he’s a gifted, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and performer. Isaak delivers an unforgettable set of traditional style blues with modern themes and clever twists to bring this vintage style new fresh life. His spontaneous stage presence is rife with off the wall humor with, sometimes, dramatic and outrageous physical stage moves.  He is a true presence and has the musical mastery, power and nuances to back it up.  With a varied mix of blues styles blended with his physically entertaining stage moves he always keeps the blues fans engaged and responsive.

Autumn Artisan Market @ the Museum

Parksville & District Chamber of Commerce and Parksville Museum have teamed up to put on a market this fall. For September and October, every Friday will be market Friday here at 1245-1275 Island Hwy East. Swing by for some local goods, enjoy live music, try out some new food at the trucks, and tour the lit-up museum in the twilight.
